Generation of shape functions for straight beam elements

چکیده

Straight beam ®nite elements with greater than two nodes are used for edge sti€ening in plane stress analyses and elsewhere. It is often necessary to match the number of nodes on the edge sti€ener to the number on a whole plane stress element side. Beam elements employ shape functions which are recognised to be level one Hermitian polynomials. An alternative to the commonly adopted method for determining these shape functions is given in this note, using a formula widely reported in mathematical texts which has hitherto not been applied to this task in the ®nite element literature. The procedure derives shape functions for beams entirely from the set of Lagrangian interpolating polynomials. Examples are given for the derivation of functions for a three and four-noded beam element. # 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Non Uniform Rational B Spline (NURBS) Based Non-Linear Analysis of Straight Beams with Mixed Formulations

Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed traditionally using conventional finite element basis functions (i.e., cubic Hermite, equi-spaced Lagrange interpolation functions, or spectral/hp Legendre functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, tota...

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bending of Straight Beams Using hp-Spectral Approximations

Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed using traditional finite element interpolations (i.e., Hermite cubic or equi-spaced Lagrange functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, total rotation φ and/or shear strain γxz, or in the integral form u...

3-node Basic Displacement Functions in Analysis of Non-Prismatic Beams

Purpose– Analysis of non-prismatic beams has been focused of attention due to wide use in complex structures such as aircraft, turbine blades and space vehicles. Apart from aesthetic aspect, optimization of strength and weight is achieved in use of this type of structures. The purpose of this paper is to present new shape functions, namely 3-node Basic Displacement Functions (BDFs) for derivati...

Analysis of Euler-Bernoulli nanobeams: A mechanical-based solution

The accuracy and efficiency of the elements proposed by finite element method (FEM) considerably depend on the interpolating functions namely shape functions used to formulate the displacement field within the element. In the present study, novel functions, namely basic displacements functions (BDFs), are introduced and exploited for structural analysis of nanobeams using finite element method ...

An Enhanced Finite Element method for Two Dimensional Linear Viscoelasticity using Complex Fourier Elements

In this paper, the finite element analysis of two-dimensional linear viscoelastic problems is performed using quadrilateral complex Fourier elements and, the results are compared with those obtained by quadrilateral classic Lagrange elements. Complex Fourier shape functions contain a shape parameter which is a constant unknown parameter adopted to enhance approximation’s accuracy. Since the iso...
